"We are the Watchers of the Quartered Grave—spirits of the North, South, East, and West, bound in death and purpose. We are the four winds of the bone-dust sky, the hollowed voices in the compass rose. Each of us bears the essence of an element inverted by the tomb, turned to necromantic power. We guard the circle where the living call the dead, and we lend our hands when the veil must thin, or the silence must speak.

Together, we are the Four Winds of the Hollow Cross. Call us with salt and ash, with bone and bell, and we shall stand at the edges of your working—watchful, wise, and death-bound. We open the gates and we guard them. We do not judge—we move the dead. "

A concord was struck that whoever owns these effigies, these spirits will assist in their Magickal endeavors…in exchange for payment, of course.

The Watchers of the Quartered Grave are a necromantic tetrad of directional spirits who embody both guardianship and elemental functions inverted through the lens of death. Each spirit stands at a cardinal point—North, East, South, and West—not merely as symbolic anchors but as sentient intelligences tied to the cycles of mortality and the flow of souls. Their power lies in their balanced unity: a wheel of necromantic function that turns with the will of the practitioner. They are not spirits of chaos or torment, but of controlled decay, preserved knowledge, and the sacred art of calling and commanding the dead. In the context of magickal operations, they serve both as gatekeepers and as active participants, able to open or bar the thresholds that separate the living from the dead.

The spirit of the North governs the grave-soil and the bones buried within. This spirit is called upon to stabilize necromantic workings and provide structure to rites of summoning or ancestral communion. It can retrieve knowledge buried beneath generations of silence, or bind restless spirits to a place, a vessel, or a sigil. Through this northern force, names may be unearthed, tombs spiritually mapped, and ancestral curses identified or dispelled. It grants a firm foundation for any operation involving the physical remains of the dead, from bones and ash to grave dirt and funerary relics. Practitioners may call upon the Northern Watcher when working with lineages, forgotten bloodlines, or historical spirits with ties to land and soil.

The Eastern spirit governs the breathless wind, the soul's final exhale, and the whisper of the departed. This spirit is essential in operations involving spirit communication, necromantic evocation, or scrying into the ghostly veil. It carries voices between realms and clarifies their messages, acting as a translator and amplifier. Through the East, a practitioner may receive clearer messages in trance or dream, may send intent into the realm of the dead, or may deliver offerings to the deceased across spiritual distance. The Eastern Watcher also has dominion over ritual smoke, incantations, and the air of tombs—subtle yet powerful currents that shape the soul’s passage.

The Southern spirit burns with a black flame—an elemental fire not of life, but of compulsion, unrest, and necromantic animation. This force is called when spirits are to be bound, commanded, or stirred to vengeance. It fuels the magic that raises shades from burial, that causes bones to move, that grants strength to the dead to act in the world of the living. It is also the spirit that ignites the inner fire of the practitioner, feeding the will necessary for high necromantic command. In destructive rites, curses, or rituals of ghostly retaliation, the South offers wrathful potency. It is called upon when baneful work requires spectral force, or when a spirit must be set ablaze with divine fury to act as a sword for the practitioner.

The Western spirit flows with the water of endings and the tide of the beyond. It governs the peaceful return of the dead, the safe closure of rites, and the gentle washing away of spiritual residue. It also allows for the temporary preservation of memory and presence—granting a spirit the ability to linger or return without corruption. In healing necromantic work, such as the reconciliation between the living and the dead, the West is called upon. It also serves as a guide for wayward spirits, helping them pass or relocate if they have been wrongly disturbed. The West cleanses the space once the working is done, drawing the remnants of death back into stillness.

Together, the Watchers of the Quartered Grave form a ritual architecture, a circle of directional spirits who stand not only as protectors of the necromantic space but as enablers of its deepest functions. Their presence allows for balance and control when working with the dead, preventing chaotic possession, false voices, or uncontrolled spiritual interference. When properly called, they become a crucible in which the dead may rise, speak, and act without disrupting the living world. They are both the gate and the key, the storm and the silence, the edge of death and the voice within it.
