The Shoba, also known as the Ishoba, is a traditional African implement fashioned from an animal's tail, in this instance that of a horse. Although perhaps most recognisable from traditional African dances, ceremonies and cultural practices, the Shoba also has a place within various African spiritual and magickal traditions.

Within Southern African traditions, the Shoba is used by certain traditional healers and spiritual practitioners, including Sangomas. Comparable implements can also be found in other African Traditional Religions, such as the Yoruba Irukere, although the particular spiritual associations differ between traditions.

From a magickal perspective, the Shoba is a rather versatile implement, particularly suited to workings involving cleansing, purification, blessing, the direction of spiritual influences and ceremonial gestures.

Depending on the practitioner's chosen paradigm, the Shoba may be incorporated into numerous ceremonial and magickal operations, including:

  • Cleansing and Purification: Sweeping over individuals, ritual implements, altars and sacred spaces to remove unwanted or stagnant spiritual influences.

  • Blessing and Consecration: Directing blessings and consecratory influences towards people, objects and ritual spaces.

  • Banishing and Dispelling: Using deliberate sweeping or flicking movements to drive away unwanted influences.

  • Invocation, Evocation and Spirit Work: Serving as a ceremonial implement during rituals involving spiritual intelligences, deities, ancestors and other entities.

  • Direction of Magickal Influences: Employing gestures to direct or disperse spiritual influences according to the practitioner's intent.

  • Ceremonial Authority: Serving as an emblem of ritual responsibility and authority within a practitioner's personal ceremonial system.

These applications include both traditional associations and contemporary adaptations. Naturally, not every application belongs to every African spiritual tradition.

We offer the Shoba is two different variants:

1. Unempowered Shoba

The Shoba is supplied in its natural, unempowered condition, without any additional ritual consecration or empowerment performed by us.

This option is ideal for practitioners who prefer to undertake their own cleansing, dedication and empowerment, particularly those who follow a specific spiritual tradition or have established methods of preparing their ritual implements.

2. Empowered Shoba – Your Chosen Spiritual Current

For practitioners wishing to receive a Shoba already ritually prepared, we offer an additional empowerment performed by us.

With this option, the Shoba will first undergo ritual cleansing and purification before being ceremonially dedicated and empowered in accordance with the magickal or spiritual current specified by the purchaser.

This may include, for example, African spiritual currents, Egyptian, Hellenic, Roman, Norse, Celestial, Infernal, Witchcraft or other magickal paradigms.

The empowerment will be tailored to the chosen current, incorporating appropriate ritual methods, correspondences, invocations, evocations and other ceremonial elements where applicable. The purpose is to prepare the Shoba as a dedicated ritual implement, suitable for general ceremonial and magickal applications within the selected current, rather than restricting it to one particular purpose.

Please note: When selecting the Empowered option, you will need to specify your chosen magickal or spiritual current. If you have a particular deity, spiritual intelligence or associated tradition in mind, you are welcome to include those details as well. Also, individual coloration may differ in the horse hair.

Whether employed in traditional African spiritual practices, ancestral work, contemporary witchcraft or more elaborate ceremonial magick, the Shoba provides an interesting alternative to the more familiar ritual wand, aspergillum or ceremonial fan.

Its natural construction and distinctive appearance make it both a practical ceremonial implement and a useful addition to the collection of any practitioner who appreciates traditional ritual tools.

We will also be available for questions, pre and post purchase.

If you decide to purchase this from us, please make sure that you are certain of your choice – as this does not carry any refunds or returns.
