Every flame has its purpose, and every flame must eventually be laid to rest.
Candles are among the most widely used implements in magickal and religious practices, serving purposes ranging from illumination and offerings to representing spiritual presences, carrying intent, and marking the passage of ritual time. Yet, whilst considerable attention is often given to the lighting of candles, rather less thought is sometimes afforded to how they are extinguished.
The Flamekeeper's Snuffer is a simple but elegant, long-handled candle snuffer designed to extinguish candle flames safely and neatly, without the need to blow them out.
Within certain magickal traditions, a distinction is made between blowing out a candle and extinguishing it with a snuffer.
Blowing out a candle involves the breath, which itself holds considerable symbolic significance in various spiritual and magickal systems. In some practices, blowing upon a flame is regarded as an intentional act of releasing, dispersing, or sending forth the energies associated with a working.
Indeed, there are traditions and practices in which blowing out a candle is entirely appropriate, and even an intentional part of the rite.
However, other practitioners prefer not to extinguish their ritual candles in this manner. In some magickal interpretations, blowing out a flame may symbolise the abrupt dispersal or interruption of the intention associated with it. Snuffing, on the other hand, can represent a more deliberate and contained conclusion, whereby the flame is extinguished without the symbolic involvement of the practitioner's breath.
This distinction can be particularly meaningful when a candle serves as an offering, represents the presence of a Deity or spirit, or forms part of a working that is to be resumed at a later time.
Of course, these are symbolic interpretations rather than universal magickal rules. The significance of either method will ultimately depend upon the tradition, the working, and the practitioner.
Beyond its symbolic associations, a candle snuffer is simply a useful implement to have on hand.
By placing the snuffer's bell over the flame, the supply of oxygen is restricted, causing the flame to go out without the forceful movement of air associated with blowing. This helps prevent hot wax from splattering and can reduce the smoke produced during extinguishing.
The extended handle is particularly convenient when working with candles positioned towards the rear of an altar, inside deeper candle holders, or amongst other ritual implements.
Made from polished stainless steel, the snuffer is durable, resistant to rust, and available in several metallic finishes to suit different preferences and altar arrangements.
Whether used for ceremonial magick, devotional offerings, candle magick, meditation, or simply the everyday extinguishing of candles, the Flamekeeper's Snuffer is a practical implement that can lend a little more care and deliberation to the closing of a ritual.
