Give your intent a form, and your working a focal point.

The use of human figures and representations in magick is certainly nothing new. Across numerous traditions and throughout history, figures fashioned from wax, clay, wood, cloth, and other materials have been employed to symbolically represent individuals within ritual and magickal workings.

Perhaps the most familiar examples are found in sympathetic magick, where an object or representation is used to establish a symbolic connection with the person or subject of a working.

The Living Image candles offer a convenient means of incorporating this principle into candle magick.

Crafted from soy wax and shaped into either a male or female human figure, these candles are available in a variety of colours, allowing practitioners to select a form and colour appropriate to their intended purpose.

Unlike an ordinary candle, which may serve as a source of illumination, an offering, or a general representation of a particular intention, a human-shaped candle provides a more recognisable symbolic representation of an individual. For example, a practitioner may use a figure candle to represent themselves during workings concerned with personal empowerment, spiritual cleansing, protection, healing, or transformation. Alternatively, it may represent another individual, whether in workings involving blessings, cursing, reconciliation, attraction, or other purposes.

The figure need not necessarily represent a particular living person, either. It may embody a certain aspect of the practitioner, a symbolic identity, an archetypal quality, or even a condition that the practitioner wishes to influence or transform. The possibilities are rather extensive, particularly when one considers the flexibility of sympathetic magick.

In many systems, the connection between a ritual figure and its intended subject is established through inscriptions, anointing oils, written petitions, names, or the incorporation of personal concerns. The candle subsequently becomes a focal point through which the practitioner directs their intention, with the act of burning forming part of the symbolic process of transformation, release, or manifestation.

The choice of colour can further complement the working. Various magickal traditions associate particular colours with certain conditions, spiritual powers, intentions, or desired outcomes. A practitioner might therefore select a colour corresponding to prosperity, affection, protection, healing, banishing, or another purpose. Naturally, such correspondences are not universal, and the practitioner should follow those appropriate to their own tradition or system.

It is also worth mentioning that a figure candle need not always be burned completely. Depending upon the nature of the working, it may be burned over several sessions, employed only during a particular stage of a ceremony, or treated as a temporary ritual representation before being disposed of in accordance with the practitioner's tradition.

These candles are suitable for a broad range of practices, from folk magick and traditional sympathetic workings to ceremonial and contemporary forms of spellcraft. Their scented wax also provides a pleasant aromatic element, whilst their sculpted appearance makes them an interesting addition to ritual arrangements.

Ultimately, The Living Image is a relatively simple implement, but one with considerable versatility. Its value lies not in any inherent magickal quality of the wax itself, but in the meaning, correspondences, and ritual significance assigned to it by the practitioner.
