Ancient symbols, carved in stone, awaiting the hand of the practitioner.
The runes have long fascinated practitioners of divination, magick, and the Northern European spiritual traditions. Originally employed as a writing system amongst Germanic peoples, the runic alphabets have subsequently acquired a considerable body of symbolic, esoteric, and magickal interpretations, making them particularly popular amongst modern practitioners.
The Riverstone Futhark is a set of 25 natural riverstones, engraved with runic symbols and finished with gold-coloured lettering. Each stone possesses its own natural characteristics, giving the set an appearance that is particularly appropriate for those who appreciate working with natural materials.
The Elder Futhark, consisting of 24 runic characters, is the oldest widely recognised runic alphabet. Each rune carries a name and a historical linguistic significance, whilst contemporary divinatory and magickal systems associate them with various forces, qualities, circumstances, and aspects of human experience.
Within modern rune divination, the stones may be drawn individually, cast upon a surface, or arranged into particular spreads to explore questions, circumstances, potential developments, and the influences believed to be surrounding a situation. Different practitioners employ different methods, and the interpretations of individual runes can vary considerably between systems.
Beyond divination, runes may also be incorporated into ritual practices, meditative exercises, talismanic workings, and the study of runic symbolism. Individual stones can serve as focal points for contemplation, be placed upon an altar to represent particular qualities, or be incorporated into ceremonies where specific runic correspondences are relevant.
These rune stones are supplied unempowered. This means they have not undergone any magickal consecration, ritual dedication, or empowerment by us. Practitioners are therefore free to cleanse and consecrate them according to their own traditions, whether through elemental rites, invocations, offerings, or other appropriate methods.
For those who work with the runes as more than a simple divinatory system, this also provides an opportunity to establish a personal relationship with the symbols through continued study, meditation, and practical use.
Each set includes a storage box and a bag, allowing the stones to be kept together and conveniently transported. As natural riverstones are used, variations in shape, colour, texture, and surface appearance are to be expected. Likewise, the handmade engraving may display minor irregularities, adding to the individuality of each set.
Whether intended for the beginner exploring runic divination or the more experienced practitioner seeking a dedicated set for ritual work, The Riverstone Futhark offers a simple and versatile starting point.
